How to Learn from a Tea Brewing Video

A short brewing video can answer questions that are hard to show in a recipe: how the lid sits on a gaiwan, how quickly a cup is filled and what the leaves look like between infusions. This written guide helps you know what to watch.
Watch the hands
Notice how the brewer holds the vessel, where the steam escapes and how the pour is controlled. Pause and try the movement with cool water before repeating it with hot water. Comfort and safety come before speed.
Watch the leaf
Look for the amount of dry leaf relative to the vessel, then how much space the leaves take after they open. A video cannot give you one universal recipe, but it can show whether a brew is light or concentrated.
Compare two rounds
See whether the brewer changes steep time for later infusions. Then take your own tasting notes: aroma, texture and the point when you want to stop. A gaiwan is a useful practice vessel.
