Matcha Basics: From Powder to First Bowl

Matcha is finely ground green tea closely associated with Japanese tea practice. Unlike loose leaf tea, the powder is whisked into water and consumed with it. That makes texture as important as aroma.
What to look for
Choose a small, well-sealed pack so you can use it while the colour and aroma are fresh. Read the origin and storage information, then notice whether the flavour suits you. A higher price alone does not tell you how a bowl will taste.
Make a simple bowl
Sift a small amount into a wide bowl to break up clumps. Add a little warm, not boiling, water and whisk until the liquid looks even. Add more water to taste. If the result is too intense, adjust the powder-to-water ratio before adding sweetener.
Matcha and Chinese loose leaf green tea offer different experiences. Try both as they are, then decide which fits your daily ritual. Explore our green teas for a loose leaf comparison.
